On a June day in 2014, 46-year-old Kenneth Jack Leslie from Sedro-Woolley, Washington, was enjoying a camping and fishing trip on the Columbia River. He was in the process of transporting gear to his campsite by boat. After successfully making one trip, he headed back to retrieve a second load of equipment. It was during this return trip across the river that the situation took a tragic turn. His boat began to take on water, causing the bow to dip and the vessel to overturn in the cold water of the river. According to the Okanogan County Sheriff's Office, a woman who was in the boat with Leslie, Colleen Gillogly, was able to make it to the shore. She was reportedly wearing a life vest. Leslie, however, was not wearing a life vest and, according to reports, was unable to swim. He was last seen clinging to the overturned boat. Gillogly recounted that Leslie had urged her to swim to the safety of the shore, which she managed to do. Tragically, the boat eventually sank, and Kenneth Leslie disappeared beneath the water's surface. One of the two dogs that were also in the boat sadly drowned. In the aftermath of the accident, search and rescue efforts were launched to find Kenneth Leslie. Despite their determined efforts, the searches yielded negative results. While the boat and some of his equipment were later found approximately five miles downstream from where the incident occurred, there was no sign of Leslie. The Okanogan County Sheriff's Office investigated the incident, but Leslie was never located. The case serves as a somber reminder of the potential dangers of boating, particularly in cold and fast-moving waters. The disappearance of Kenneth Leslie is a heartbreaking story of a recreational outing that ended in tragedy, leaving his loved ones without answers.
