In the early hours of March 4, 2015, 29-year-old Kenneth Dale Hamm, affectionately known as "Tater," vanished from his cousin's home in Dunlow, a small community in Wayne County, West Virginia. The conditions on the night of his disappearance were treacherous; it was very cold with heavy rain that resulted in widespread flooding. Compounding the difficulty, the area was blanketed with 8 to 12 inches of snow the following day, severely hampering initial search efforts and likely
erasing any potential evidence of his movements. The sudden disappearance of the friendly and engaging young man sent a shockwave of concern through his family and the close-knit community.
At the time he went missing, Kenneth stood between 6 feet and 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighing between 180 and 200 pounds. He had sandy, short-cut hair and blue eyes. His appearance was marked by several distinct tattoos, located on his left hand, left forearm, right finger, right hand, right forearm, and upper right arm. When last seen, he was wearing a striped long-sleeve shirt, possibly blue and yellow or grey and yellow, along with dark blue jeans and white tennis shoes. He also had some facial hair, as if he had not shaved for a couple of weeks. These details were shared widely by his family and law enforcement in the desperate hope that someone might come forward with information.
For years, Kenneth's family and friends relentlessly pursued answers, organizing searches, distributing flyers, and using social media to keep his story in the public eye. The West Virginia State Police conducted an investigation, but the case was met with significant challenges due to a lack of clear information or substantial evidence. Despite the passage of time, his family held vigils and community events, never giving up hope for a resolution. Tragically, after more than seven years of agonizing uncertainty, Kenneth's remains were discovered on March 25, 2021, in the same area where he was last seen.
