Javier Castro, a 21-year-old from Cape Coral, Florida, went missing on June 18, 2016, while swimming near Boca Grande's Range Light Beach. He was enjoying time with his family when several of his siblings became stranded on a sandbar, unable to return to shore due to a strong rip current. Javier bravely attempted to save them, but while three of his siblings were rescued, he was swept away by the current. A jet skier managed to recover one of the siblings but reported seeing Javier go underwater without a life jacket.
The U.S. Coast Guard launched an extensive search operation, covering over 250 square nautical miles with multiple search teams by air and sea. Despite these efforts, Javier was not located, and the search was suspended two days later on June 20, 2016. The authorities expressed their condolences to Javier's family, acknowledging the difficult decision to end the search. His disappearance serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers of rip currents in Florida's coastal waters.
