Donald Thomas Kimberly, a 16-year-old from Fort Myers, Florida, went missing on June 19, 2016, during a tragic sailing accident. Donald was aboard a 29-foot sailboat with his father, Ace Kimberly, and his two siblings, Rebecca (17) and Roger (13). The family had set out from Sarasota, Florida, intending to travel to Fort Myers for repairs to their sailboat. However, while off the coast of Englewood, they encountered severe thunderstorms and large waves.
Ace Kimberly made a distress call to his brother, describing the difficult conditions they were facing and saying they were trying to survive the storm.
The wreckage of the family's boat was discovered a few days later in the Gulf of Mexico, about 33 miles off the coast of Sanibel Island. Both Rebecca and Ace's bodies were recovered, but Donald and his brother Roger were never found and are presumed to have drowned. Despite extensive search efforts by the U.S. Coast Guard, including the recovery of some of the boat's debris, Donald and Roger remain missing.
