That evening, Dreher visited his father around 7:30 p.m., and the following day, there were unconfirmed sightings of him walking north along South Federal Avenue, where he reportedly mentioned heading to Chicago. His vehicle, a maroon 1950 Hudson, was discovered parked near Willow Creek on November 10 with a parking ticket dated November 8.
All his belongings were still inside the car, but there was no sign of Dreher himself.
Dreher, a U.S. Navy veteran who served in World War II, had been living in Mason City after returning home from the war. Despite dragging the nearby river, authorities found no trace of him. Foul play has long been suspected, given that Dreher never accessed his Social Security, veteran's benefits, or bank accounts following his disappearance.
