In the summer of 1961, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a 47-year-old woman named Martha Alice Mertz vanished from her home and was never seen or heard from again. On the evening of June 22nd, Martha was at her apartment on West Vine Street with her husband of eleven years, J. Calvin Mertz. The couple had been arguing, a not entirely uncommon occurrence in their marriage. Following the heated discussion, her husband left their home to buy cigarettes. When he returned about half an hour later, Martha was gone. She was last seen wearing a white blouse and black "pedal pusher" pants. Martha’s husband reported that a suitcase was also missing, though he was unable to specify what clothes she might have packed. Curiously, a new outfit she had recently purchased was left behind, a detail her sister found strange. In the past, Martha had left home after arguments with her husband on approximately six other occasions, but she would always reach out to a family member shortly after. This time was different; no one from her family or circle of friends ever heard from her again. A neighbor who overheard the argument that night stated it didn't sound any more severe than their previous disagreements and heard no signs of physical violence. After discovering his wife was gone, Martha's husband traveled to West Palm Beach, Florida, to "cool off" after the argument. Meanwhile, it was Martha's sister who reported her missing to the Lancaster police. As days turned into weeks and then years, the mystery of Martha's disappearance deepened. A significant aspect of her case was her financial thriftiness. She had approximately $9,000 in bank accounts, a considerable sum for the time, which remained completely untouched after she vanished. Additionally, two of her final paychecks and her vacation pay were never claimed. For a woman known to be careful with her money, leaving such a sum behind was highly out of character. A close friend had once confided that Martha was tired of the constant arguments with her husband and had expressed a desire to leave and go somewhere no one would know her. However, the evidence of her abandoned finances cast a long shadow of doubt over the theory that she had simply started a new life. After seven years with no contact or any sign of life, Martha Alice Mertz was declared legally deceased by the Lancaster County Courts in the summer of 1969. Her case remains an unsolved and poignant mystery, a story of a woman who, after an ordinary argument on a summer evening, walked out of her life and into the unknown, leaving behind only questions and a lingering sense of sorrow.
