In the close-knit community of Asheville, North Carolina, the disappearance of 27-year-old Gabriel 'Gabe' Thor Crow has left a void filled with unanswered questions and growing concern. An enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Gabriel was last seen on January 27, 2024, in the vicinity of Starnes Cove Road and Yosemite Trail in West Asheville.
Known as a talented artisan, particularly for his traditional rivercane basketry, his absence has been deeply felt by his family and community. The day before he was last seen, his mother had dropped him off to rent a car. The details of his last known moments are drawn from an unsettling encounter with law enforcement.
The sequence of events leading to Gabriel's disappearance began to unfold on the afternoon of January 27th, when a Buncombe County sheriff's deputy discovered the car he had rented abandoned in a field off Starnes Cove Road with all its doors open. Shortly thereafter, the deputy found Gabriel walking nearby. During their conversation, Gabriel reportedly seemed distressed, stating that he had been visiting a friend and had learned some unsettling information that made him want to leave. He also mentioned to the deputy his belief that something might have been put in his car and that his friend had thrown the car keys into the field. The deputy offered Gabriel a ride to a gas station, which he declined, choosing to walk instead. This was the last confirmed sighting of Gabriel Crow. His family, unable to contact him, officially reported him missing the following day.
In the weeks and months that followed, the search for Gabriel intensified, drawing in multiple law enforcement agencies and community members. The Asheville Police Department has led the ongoing investigation, dedicating hundreds of hours to the case. In a significant effort to find him, a large-scale search of Spivey Mountain and the surrounding areas was organized in April 2024, involving numerous law enforcement, fire, and emergency service agencies, as well as K9s and drones. Despite the extensive grid search conducted by over 120 personnel, no evidence of Gabriel's whereabouts was found. The case remains open and active, a painful and unresolved chapter for his loved ones and all who are searching for him. The disappearance of Gabriel Thor Crow is a somber reminder of a vibrant community member who vanished, leaving behind a family desperate for answers and a community hoping for his safe return.Last Seen: Jan 27, 2024
