In the early autumn of 1982, Wyteria Jones, a 45-year-old woman, was beginning a new chapter in her life in Elgin, Illinois. She had been residing for several months at the Douglas Hotel, an extended-stay hotel situated in the downtown area of the city. During this time, she had also received treatment at the Elgin Mental Health Center. Wyteria was living separately from her husband, who resided in the nearby city of Aurora.
