In the spring of 1987, a sense of excitement was in the air for 26-year-old Kimberly Shanders of Carpentersville, Illinois. She had won tickets from a local radio station to see one of her favorite performers, Kris Kristofferson, in Merrillville, Indiana. On April 24, 1987, Kimberly left her home, presumably to make the journey to the concert. It is believed she had on her person her glasses and $120 in traveler's checks.
