On the afternoon of January 2, 2016, 53-year-old Kathleen Williams vanished from her home in Victoria, Virginia. Her husband had gone to the grocery store, leaving her asleep inside their 10th Street residence. When he returned about an hour later, between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m., she was gone. Kathleen, who was also known as Katy, had red, curly, chin-length hair and hazel eyes. She was last seen wearing blue jeans and black boots.
Chillingly, she had left without her purse, wallet, or car, but may have taken a. 380 pistol with her. It is not known if she left the residence on foot or in a vehicle.
The disappearance of Kathleen was described as uncharacteristic. Concern was heightened by the fact that she had health conditions, including bipolar disorder and early-onset dementia, and required medication which she did not have with her. Her family was also worried because she had never before left her son, who has special needs, home alone. In the days following her disappearance, an intensive search was launched, quickly growing from friends and family to a large-scale operation involving around 100 people. Multiple agencies, including the Virginia State Police and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, joined the Victoria Police Department in the effort. Search parties utilized dog teams, trackers, ground teams, and equine teams to scour a two-mile radius around her home, including areas around several bodies of water.
Despite the extensive and methodical searches, no clues to her whereabouts were found, and the active search and rescue operation was suspended after a week. A year after she went missing, the Victoria Police Chief stated that they still had no leads and there was no evidence to suggest foul play was involved in her disappearance. The case remains an open investigation, with law enforcement and her loved ones still hoping for information that might lead to her whereabouts. The circumstances surrounding Kathleen Williams's disappearance are unsettling, as she seemingly vanished from her own home in a short window of time, leaving behind nearly all of her personal belongings.
