On December 7, 2016, 25-year-old Kyle Longerbeam, a male pilot, departed Port Alsworth, Alaska, in a single-engine Piper PA-28 Cherokee aircraft. He was accompanied by three members of the Blom family: Scott, and his two children, Kaitlyn and Zachary. Their destination was Anchorage, Alaska, a flight that should have taken about ninety minutes. The group was traveling for a state volleyball championship in which the children's school was competing. Unfortunately, the plane never reached Anchorage, and all four individuals vanished, prompting deep concern and a swift response. An extensive search was launched in the rugged area around Lake Clark, but efforts were severely hampered by challenging weather conditions, including persistent ice fog, which is common for that time of year. The day after the plane's disappearance, searchers discovered debris floating in Lake Clark, including the plane's co-pilot seat, three wheels, and some personal items belonging to those on board. Despite these findings, the main wreckage of the aircraft and the occupants were never located. The official search was eventually suspended due to the hazardous weather and the low probability of finding survivors in the deep, icy waters of the lake. The National Transportation Safety Board investigated the incident but could not determine a definitive cause for the crash due to the lack of physical evidence. It was noted that while weather conditions were acceptable for visual flight rules upon takeoff, there was reduced visibility and low-lying freezing fog along the flight path over Lake Clark. Longerbeam was not yet rated for instrument flight, which may have been a contributing factor. The overview of this case is one of profound loss and lingering uncertainty for the families and the close-knit community of Port Alsworth. Kyle Longerbeam and the Blom family are presumed to be deceased, but because their bodies have not been recovered, they remain classified as missing.
