On May 1, 2017, an 18-year-old female named Desirea Ferris was last seen by her family in Liberty, Missouri. That day, she and her sister were picked up by a male acquaintance. They spent the day with him, visiting several locations, including abandoned houses. Later in the afternoon, they were dropped off at a McDonald's in Kansas City, where another man picked them up and drove them to a different McDonald's back in Liberty.
Desirea's sister was eventually taken home, but Desirea remained with the men. She was supposed to be dropped off at a friend's house but never arrived. The last known sighting of Desirea was in the early morning hours of May 2, 2017, in the Marlborough neighborhood of Kansas City, an area known for high rates of crime and drug activity.
In the hours before her disappearance, Desirea was in contact with her family and made several communications. She had been texting with her mother throughout the day on May 1st and had promised to be home to celebrate her mother's birthday. Around 1:00 a.m. on May 2nd, Desirea texted her sister to say she was on her way home. Her last known phone activity included a call to an unknown person at 2:06 a.m., her last Facebook activity at 3:00 a.m., and a final text to the same number she had called earlier at 5:14 a.m. Cell phone pings from Desirea's phone provided some clues to her last known whereabouts. One of her last pings was recorded at 3:14 a.m. near a cell tower by I-70 and Nolan Road in Independence. The final ping from her phone was recorded at 4:11 a.m. near an abandoned house. After this time, all activity on her phone ceased, and calls went directly to voicemail.
Desirea's family grew concerned when she failed to return home and they were unable to reach her, which was highly uncharacteristic of her as she was in constant contact with her mother. After three days with no contact, her mother officially reported her missing to the Liberty Police Department on May 4, 2017. Described as having a warm and bubbly personality, Desirea was 5'1' and weighed around 95 pounds at the time of her disappearance. She has brown hair, brown eyes, a birthmark on her stomach next to her navel, and a one-and-a-half-inch scar on her left forearm. She was last seen wearing a white or cream-colored crop top, sweatpants, and a pink fuzzy jacket, and she was carrying a tan purse. The investigation into her disappearance has faced challenges, but her family continues to search for answers.
