In the quiet community of Eufaula, Oklahoma, a family's life was forever altered in the summer of 2017. Paul Wayne Barnett, a 48-year-old man and an enrolled member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, disappeared under puzzling circumstances. On June 1, 2017, Paul's sister gave him a ride to a local store, a simple act of kindness that would become the last confirmed time a family member would see him. This ordinary day marked the beginning of a prolonged and painful period of uncertainty for his loved ones. Paul, who was also known by his nickname "Squirrely," was a resident of McIntosh County and lived on tribal land. Days turned into an agonizing wait, and on June 5, 2017, Paul's sister went to his home to pick him up but found no trace of him. The alarm was raised, leading to a welfare check on his residence, but he was not found. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance were immediately concerning. Paul did not own a vehicle, which made his sudden absence from his home all the more perplexing. He was described as being between 5'7" and 5'9" tall and weighing around 180 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. His appearance was distinguished by a mustache and several tattoos, including a notable one on his left shoulder blade of a gargoyle with the names 'Mamie' and 'Austin' on its wings and 'Barnett' in the middle. He also had several scars on his heel, knees, rib cage, forearm, and face. When he was last seen, he was thought to be wearing a t-shirt, cargo shorts, a black belt, and dark grey New Balance tennis shoes. The investigation into Paul's disappearance was opened, with the Muscogee Mvskoke Creek Nation Lighthorse Tribal Police Department taking the lead. His personal effects, which were likely with him, included a wallet containing his tribal card, state ID, and other important documents, as well as cigarettes and a house key on a beaded lanyard. As time stretched on with no sign of Paul or any clues to his whereabouts, the case grew colder. The initial report of his disappearance by his sister after she could not locate him at his home remains the critical starting point of a mystery that has left a family searching for answers. The case of Paul Wayne Barnett is a somber reminder of the individuals who vanish, leaving behind a void of information and a community hoping for a resolution.
