On July 21, 1974, 9-year-old Jean Marie "Jeanie" Schoen disappeared from Jacksonville, Florida. She was last seen leaving her grandmother’s house on West 19th Street to walk to a nearby store, Hanna’s Food Store, about two blocks away. Jean purchased a pack of cigarettes for her uncle but initially forgot them and had to return to the store.
Afterward, she was reportedly seen at a local arcade called The Hangout, where witnesses stated a man with "Elvis-like" hair dragged her into a bathroom. Jean was seen crying after the encounter, and both she and the man left the area together. She has not been seen since.
Jean's disappearance marked the start of a tragic summer in Jacksonville, as she was the first of five young girls to vanish within three months. The other girls ranged in age from 6 to 12, with two of their bodies eventually being found, but Jean's remains, along with those of two others, have never been located. Despite extensive investigations, no clear link between the cases has been established, and Jean's case remains unsolved. At the time of her disappearance, Jean was an excellent student and active in her Brownie troop.
