In the autumn of 1994, 39-year-old Vicki Bea Rowe-Simonsen vanished at sea while traveling in the Gulf of Alaska. On October 26, 1994, she was a crewmember aboard the 105-foot crab fishing vessel, the F/V Fierce Competitor. The ship had departed from Warrenton, Oregon, and was en route to King Cove, Alaska. Also on board were four other individuals: Vicki's husband, Robert "Robbie" Simonsen, who was the skipper of the vessel, Larry Jones, Keithly Young, and Gordon Young. The journey took a tragic turn, and the vessel and all five people aboard disappeared without a trace. The circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the F/V Fierce Competitor point to a sudden and catastrophic event at sea. Most of the crew hailed from Warrenton, Oregon. An Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) signal was detected, and a life raft from the vessel was later spotted approximately 450 miles southeast of Kodiak. This location was about 50 miles from where the EPIRB signal had originated. Unfortunately, severe weather conditions at the time prevented the retrieval of the life raft. Reports indicated that there were no signs of life visible on or around the raft. The disappearance of Vicki Rowe-Simonsen and the other four crew members remains an unresolved maritime mystery. The five individuals who were lost included Robert Simonsen (39), Larry Jones (37), Keithly Young (31), Gordon Young (18), and Vicki herself. Despite the detection of the EPIRB and the sighting of the life raft, no survivors were ever found, and the vessel itself was never recovered. The case serves as a somber reminder of the perils of the sea, particularly in the unforgiving waters of the Gulf of Alaska. The lack of survivors or wreckage has left the families of the crew with unanswered questions and enduring grief for their loved ones who were lost to the ocean.
