On July 2, 1997, 71-year-old Douglas Reed and his wife, Beryl, went missing after their private plane crashed into Penobscot Bay, Maine. The couple had been flying from Stonington to Pittsfield, accompanied by two friends. During the flight, the plane encountered trouble and crashed into the water. While search efforts were initiated, only the bodies of the two friends were recovered. Despite extensive searches by authorities and volunteers, neither Douglas nor his wife, Beryl, were ever found.
