John Gregory Hughes, a 49-year-old resident of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, went missing on May 7, 2012, alongside his girlfriend, Heidi Rhodes. The couple was last seen in Bay County, and neither has been heard from since. Their disappearance went unreported for several weeks, which was unusual, as it was out of character for them to leave without any warning.
In the days following their disappearance, a man named Barry T. Davis, an acquaintance of Hughes, became a significant figure in the investigation. Davis was found driving Hughes's Corvette on May 11, just four days after Hughes and Rhodes were last seen. He later sold the car for $15,000, which led to grand theft charges. Additionally, Davis was found in possession of several of Hughes's belongings, which he sold or pawned. Further investigation revealed a grisly account from Davis's former girlfriend, who testified that she witnessed him brutally murder both Hughes and Rhodes. Despite this, the bodies of the couple have never been recovered. Davis was convicted of their murders in 2013 and was sentenced to death.
