Faye Whatley, aged 68, and her husband, John Whatley, went missing from their home near Bastrop, Texas, on January 27, 1976. Their disappearance was discovered after the couple failed to attend their granddaughter’s wedding rehearsal and the wedding itself. Concerned family members asked law enforcement to conduct a wellness check at their rural ranch.
Upon investigation, police found the Whatleys' home seemingly undisturbed, but a bullet hole was discovered in the bedroom window, and curiously, the entire bedroom door had been removed. The couple's vehicles remained in the garage, and their personal belongings, such as wallets and eyeglasses, were left behind.
Authorities believe the couple may have disappeared between January 27 and January 28, based on newspapers found inside the house. A suspicious vehicle was reportedly seen near the property on the night of their disappearance, but despite extensive searches, no trace of the couple was found. Years later, serial killer Henry Lee Lucas claimed responsibility for their murder, stating that he and an accomplice had disposed of their bodies in Nevada, but no concrete evidence was found to support his confession.
