He had been at the cabin with a friend, who left briefly to gather supplies. When Elgen's family arrived at the cabin for a surprise visit, they found the door unlocked, the power turned off, and his winter coat and dog left behind. His dog, who was normally house-trained, had urinated inside, which raised concern.
There were no signs of William, and his family immediately reported him missing.
