In the winter of 2024, a 54-year-old man named Corey Blaine Coleman vanished into the Alaskan wilderness near Juneau. His disappearance on January 10th was preceded by a violent altercation at a property near the 33-mile marker of Glacier Highway. Reports from that day indicate that Coleman was involved in a dispute with a 72-year-old property owner who had found him trespassing. The confrontation escalated, resulting in the property owner sustaining a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the head from his own handgun. Following the incident, Coleman fled the scene in a small silver truck. He was last seen by a passenger in his vehicle walking into the woods at the end of the road near Echo Cove. Authorities quickly identified Corey Coleman as the suspect in the assault. He is described as a white male, standing 5'11" and weighing around 185 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He has several distinguishing marks, including the missing tip of his left ring finger and scars on both hands and his left foot. In the days following the incident, law enforcement located the truck Coleman had been driving and recovered the weapon involved in the shooting. Search efforts were undertaken by the Juneau Police Department and Alaska State Troopers in the area where he was last seen. Signs of his presence were found, but it remained unclear if he had taken shelter in the vast wilderness or managed to return to a populated area. Concern for his well-being was heightened by the fact that he was not dressed for the harsh ten-degree Fahrenheit weather on the day he went missing. As time passed with no sign of Coleman, the focus of the investigation shifted. Initially a search for a suspect in a felony assault, the case evolved into a missing person investigation. The Juneau Police Department officially listed him as a missing person, a measure taken to keep his case in the public eye and to aid in the potential identification of his remains should they ever be discovered. The circumstances of his disappearance, a combination of a violent act followed by his entry into the unforgiving Alaskan backcountry during freezing temperatures, create a complex and troubling narrative. The overview of the case suggests a man who, following a serious altercation, made a desperate move into the wilderness, ill-prepared for the conditions, leaving behind a lingering mystery for law enforcement and the community.
