On August 21, 1996, 11-year-old Trudy Appleby vanished from her home in Moline, Illinois. That morning, her father, Dennis Appleby, left for work at 9:00 a.m., leaving Trudy alone at home. Between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m., a neighbor observed Trudy entering a silver or gray four-door box-style vehicle, resembling a Chevrolet Celebrity, parked in the driveway. The driver was described as a Caucasian male in his twenties with shoulder-length curly brown or black hair, wearing a baseball cap. Trudy was never seen again.
Initially, authorities treated Trudy's disappearance as a possible runaway case. However, this theory was soon discounted. Trudy had taken a swimsuit and a towel with her but left behind approximately $200 she had saved for an upcoming vacation. Her family's residence was located off the main road and was not visible from the street, leading investigators to believe she may have known her abductor.
In 2017, William "Ed" Smith was identified as the prime suspect in Trudy's disappearance. Smith, a friend of Trudy's father, had been seen with Trudy in his car on the day she vanished. A witness, David Whipple, who was Smith's son-in-law, reported seeing Trudy in Smith's vehicle and claimed Smith threatened to kill him if he disclosed this information. Smith was seen alone later that day, and he had his car scrapped within a week of Trudy's disappearance. He died in 2014 without ever being charged.
In 2020, two more individuals were named as persons of interest: David Whipple and Jamison "Jamie" Fisher. Whipple, a registered sex offender, refused to cooperate with investigators and died in August 2022. Fisher, a lifelong friend of the Smith family, was sentenced to two years in prison on an unrelated auto theft charge in 2021 and is due for release in 2026. Investigators believe both men may have knowledge of Trudy's disappearance and could have helped cover up the incident. ...Read More
