A Routine Journey Turns Mysterious
On October 1, 1998, Walter Thomas, a 34-year-old Alaska Native man from Kotzebue, embarked on a skiff trip to Buckland, a nearby village. Accompanied by 27-year-old Blaine Lee, the voyage was expected to be straightforward. However, the two men never arrived at their destination, and their skiff was later found missing. Debris believed to be from their vessel was discovered washed ashore between Cape Blossom and Riley Wreck, but no further traces of Thomas or Lee were ever found.
The Men Behind the Names
Walter Thomas stood 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighed 148 pounds, and had black hair and brown eyes. He was of American Indian/Alaska Native descent. Blaine Lee, his companion, was 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighed 160 pounds, and also had black hair and brown eyes.
