On May 23, 1993, the rural community of Sunizona, Arizona, witnessed the unsettling disappearance of 14-year-old Danielle Pitcher and her 47-year-old mother, Dorothy. The day began typically for the Pitcher family, with Danielle attending church alongside her five younger siblings. Later that afternoon, around 1 p.m., Dorothy asked Danielle to accompany her on a three-mile walk to the local RV Park Store at the intersection of Highway 666 (now Highway 191) and Highway 181, intending to purchase cigarettes for her husband, John "Jack" Pitcher.
En route to the store, Dorothy and Danielle stopped by the home of one of Dorothy's older daughters, inviting her to join them. She declined but suggested they return for dinner after their errand. At the store, they bought cigarettes, enjoyed ice cream cones, and made a call from the pay phone outside, as their home lacked a telephone. Friends later reported seeing them walking back along Highway 181 near the S-curve, approximately 1.5 miles from their residence.
Dorothy and Danielle never returned home. Their personal belongings, including Dorothy's dentures, eyeglasses, purse, and driver's license, were left behind, indicating they had not planned to leave for an extended period. Search dogs tracked their scent from the store along Highway 181 but lost the trail near the S-curve, suggesting they may have been picked up by a vehicle at that location.
John Pitcher, Dorothy's husband of 27 years, was initially considered a person of interest but was later ruled out after passing two polygraph tests. Investigators also looked into a man from Flint, Michigan, with whom Dorothy had previously had an affair. However, he had moved back to Michigan before the disappearance, and surveillance showed no evidence connecting him to the case. Authorities have identified two suspects over the years, but their identities have not been publicly disclosed. ...Read More
