On the morning of November 20, 2004, Nicholas Mayer, a 31-year-old construction worker and father of two from Hoonah, Alaska, embarked on a routine outing with his lifelong friend, James “Jim” Metlicka, 30, of Eagle River. The two friends, who had been inseparable since their school days in Juneau, set out from the harbor aboard Metlicka’s 26-foot cabin cruiser, the Julie K. Their plan was to retrieve crab pots and hunt deer near Horse and Colt Islands, approximately 12 miles west of Juneau .
Later that afternoon, the Julie K was discovered capsized near Horse Island. The U.S. Coast Guard conducted an immediate search and found two deceased dogs inside the overturned cabin—one belonging to Mayer and the other to Metlicka. Additionally, they recovered a float coat, an immersion suit, and several personal flotation devices. These findings suggested that the men had little to no time to react, possibly caught off guard by sudden, choppy waters while pulling a crab pot .
The Coast Guard launched a comprehensive search operation, deploying helicopters, boats, and night-vision equipment. Search-and-rescue dogs and their handlers combed the beaches of Horse and Colt Islands. Despite these efforts, no trace of Mayer or Metlicka was found. The Coast Guard eventually suspended the official search, deeming the chances of survival unlikely. Nevertheless, family members, friends, and volunteers continued to search the area, utilizing private airplanes and boats, and even conducting dives in hopes of finding the missing men .
The disappearance of Mayer and Metlicka left a profound impact on their families and the local community. Mayer's mother, Linda Mayer, described the bond between the two men, highlighting their shared history and deep friendship. The sudden loss was not only a personal tragedy but also a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers posed by Alaska's rugged wilderness and waters ....Read More
