A Fateful Day at Sea
On November 26, 1996, William Tyler, a 39-year-old fisherman from Ketchikan, Alaska, embarked on what was expected to be a routine voyage aboard the fishing vessel Tamra Dawn. The vessel was operating near Clarence Strait, approximately two miles from Point McCarty, situated south of Ketchikan. Tragically, the Tamra Dawn was reported to be sinking in the area, leading to the presumption that Tyler drowned during the incident.
The Search and Its Challenges
Following the distress report, the U.S. Coast Guard initiated a search operation in the vicinity of Clarence Strait. Despite their efforts, neither William Tyler nor the Tamra Dawn was recovered. The vastness and depth of the Alaskan waters, combined with challenging weather conditions, often hinder search and recovery missions in the region.
