Blake Wade Pursley was a 14-year-old boy from Flagler, Colorado, whose life was marked by resilience and determination. Born on August 18, 1979, Blake faced significant medical challenges stemming from a near-drowning accident at the age of three. This traumatic event resulted in a paralyzed vocal cord, a life-threatening internal fungus, poor motor skills in his right arm, and seizures that required daily medication. Despite these obstacles, Blake's intelligence remained unimpaired, though he functioned at the level of a nine-year-old and had learning and behavioral difficulties. His physical appearance included a limp due to his left leg being four inches shorter than his right, and he bore numerous scars from multiple surgeries. Blake was known for his determination and the love he shared with his family.
In June 1994, Blake was enrolled at the CEDU School in Running Springs, California, a private residential facility for children with special needs. The school, which marketed itself as a therapeutic boarding school, had a controversial reputation due to allegations of abuse and neglect. Blake's mother, Zylpha Pursley, hoped that the school would provide the specialized care her son needed. However, Blake quickly became homesick and expressed a desire to return home. He had only been at the school for less than a month before his disappearance.
On the evening of June 26, 1994, Blake was last seen around 8:00 p.m., heading to a barn on the school property to check on the animals. A staff member reported seeing the light turn on in the barn shortly after Blake entered. When Blake failed to return by the 10:00 p.m. curfew, a search was initiated. A tracker followed his distinctive footprints to a paved road near the school, where they veered to the right, leading toward a rugged cliff behind the campus. Despite extensive searches, no further trace of Blake was found.
Initially, authorities treated Blake's disappearance as a runaway case, a common occurrence at CEDU, which reportedly had frequent incidents of students attempting to flee. However, Blake's family questioned this narrative, citing his medical conditions and cognitive limitations that would have made it difficult for him to survive without assistance. They also expressed concerns about the school's handling of the situation and the possibility of foul play. ...Read More
