A Quiet Morning Departure

On the morning of February 16, 2019, 62-year-old William “Bud” Hardy left his home on South Ocotillo Lane in Yuma, Arizona, around 9:00 a.m. He was last seen by his fiancée and caregiver, Jeana Brown, who was preparing to leave town with her mother. Hardy, who suffered from dementia, was observed washing dishes before his departure. A neighbor later reported seeing him drive away in his blue 2012 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. He was dressed in a light blue shirt and tan plaid pajama pants, attire that underscored the unexpected nature of his outing.

The Search Begins

When Hardy failed to return home, concern grew rapidly. The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office received a missing person report on February 17, 2019. Given Hardy's medical condition, the situation was dire. Authorities issued a Silver Alert, and search efforts commenced immediately. Despite extensive searches, there were no immediate leads or sightings, leaving family and law enforcement grasping for answers.

Discovery in the Desert

Nearly two months later, on April 7, 2019, U.S. Border Patrol agents located Hardy's abandoned vehicle in a remote area of the Sonoran Desert, approximately six miles southeast of Foothills Boulevard and East County 14th Street. The truck was found locked, with no keys inside, and there were no signs of foul play or footprints leading away from the vehicle. The location was less than ten miles from Hardy's home, yet it offered no clues to his whereabouts.

Legal Proceedings and Declaration

With no new information emerging, Hardy's family sought legal closure. In April 2021, attorney Thomas Asimou petitioned the Yuma County Superior Court to have Hardy declared legally dead. During the proceedings, witnesses, including Jeana Brown, testified about Hardy's disappearance and the exhaustive but fruitless investigation. A medical expert stated that, considering Hardy's dementia and the harsh desert environment, survival beyond a few days was unlikely. On May 4, 2021, Judge Claudia Gonzalez declared Hardy legally deceased as of the date he went missing. ...Read More
