A Routine Voyage Turns Tragic
On September 13, 1993, the 58-foot crab fishing vessel Nettie H departed from King Cove, Alaska, bound for Saint Paul Island. The vessel, based out of Seattle, carried a crew of five: Captain Peter Soileau, 35, of Ballard; his brothers David Soileau, 29, and Daniel Soileau, 24; engineer Blake Grinstein, 35, of Bellingham; and deckhand Julie Mereness, 23, of Cottage Grove, Oregon. The crew was experienced, and the voyage was considered routine. However, the Nettie H never reached its destination.
The Disappearance and Search Efforts
When the Nettie H failed to arrive at Saint Paul Island, concerns grew, prompting a massive search operation. The U.S. Coast Guard initiated an extensive search covering approximately 23,000 square miles of the Bering Sea. Despite the scale of the operation, no trace of the vessel or its crew was ever found.
