On the evening of May 31, 1997, 15-year-old Vanessa Dawn Smith left her family home on Winton Way in Winton, California, for a brief walk she had taken countless times before. Accompanied only by her walking stick, which she used to ward off stray dogs, Vanessa set out around 7:00 p.m. along Mercedes Avenue, intending to cut through a nearby almond orchard and return home within minutes. This routine stroll, however, would mark the last time anyone saw her. When Vanessa failed to return by nightfall, her parents contacted authorities, initiating a search that would extend for decades without resolution.
During the initial search, investigators found Vanessa's walking stick approximately 200 yards east of her residence along Mercedes Avenue, near the edge of the almond orchard. This location was along her usual route, suggesting she had not deviated from her planned path. No other physical evidence was discovered at the scene. Notably, Vanessa had left behind her purse, containing her savings, and a cherished watch, indicating she had not planned to be away for long.
In 2019, an elderly couple from Winton came forward with a recollection from the day of Vanessa's disappearance. They reported seeing a teenage girl matching Vanessa's description walking alone with a stick in hand along Mercedes Avenue around the time she vanished. They did not observe any other vehicles in the area during that time. Later, on their return trip via a different route, they encountered what they described as suspicious activity, though details were not disclosed publicly. The couple admitted they had not reported this earlier due to fear of retaliation and a desire to avoid involvement.
Over the years, the Merced County Sheriff's Department has continued to investigate Vanessa's disappearance, treating it as a case of non-family abduction. Detective Sergeant Clint Landrum, who has been involved with the case for over eight years, has expressed a personal commitment to solving it, stating, "There's somebody out there right now, 100%, that holds the key to unlocking this whole thing." In efforts to generate new leads, detectives have distributed flyers at truck stops and other locations, hoping someone might come forward with information. ...Read More
