On the morning of May 31, 2007, Stanley Chen, a 60-year-old resident of Waikiki, set out for a fishing trip at Bamboo Ridge, a well-known yet perilous fishing spot near Sandy Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii. The area, while popular among local anglers, is notorious for its unpredictable waves and strong currents. That day, a fellow fisherman observed Chen at the water's edge but, upon returning after a brief absence, found only Chen's fishing gear—cooler and poles—still in place, with no sign of Chen himself .
The disappearance prompted an immediate response from local authorities. The Honolulu Police Department initiated a missing-person investigation, and a comprehensive search was launched. The Honolulu Fire Department, city Ocean Safety Division, and the U.S. Coast Guard collaborated in the effort, deploying helicopters, boats, and divers to scour the area. Despite covering a 47-square-mile area from Makapuu Point to Diamond Head, the search yielded no trace of Chen .
Bamboo Ridge is infamous for its hazardous conditions. Even on seemingly calm days, the area can be treacherous for those unfamiliar with its dangers. Fire Capt. Terry Seelig noted that the spot can be deceptive, with sudden waves posing significant risks to fishermen. The presence of a memorial at the site, dedicated to those who have lost their lives in the waters below, underscores the area's perilous nature .
Stanley Chen was known to his co-workers at Peony Arts, a Hawaiian quilts and gifts shop located at the Marriott Hotel.
