On May 1, 1993, Robert Joseph Thompson, a 55-year-old Sarasota resident, informed friends and family of his plans to relocate to Colorado. Standing six feet tall and weighing 200 pounds, Thompson was described as a white male with gray or partially gray hair, hazel eyes, and a distinctive scar on his left cheek. He was partially balding, often combing his hair over the bald spots. His departure seemed routine, with no immediate cause for concern among those who knew him.
Approximately five weeks after Thompson's departure, on June 7, 1993, his vehicle was discovered abandoned at Mile 1289 of the Alaska Highway, near Midway Lake in Tok, Alaska. This location is thousands of miles from both Sarasota and Colorado, raising immediate questions about his intended destination and the reasons for his presence in such a remote area. There was no sign of Thompson at the scene, and he has not been heard from since.
The circumstances surrounding Thompson's disappearance are perplexing. Despite his stated intention to move to Colorado, his vehicle's location in Alaska suggests a significant deviation from his planned route. There is no public record of any communication from Thompson after his departure, which is uncharacteristic according to those familiar with him. The lack of evidence or leads has left investigators with few avenues to explore.
The Alaska State Troopers have been the primary agency investigating Thompson's disappearance. Despite efforts to locate him or uncover information about his movements, the case remains unsolved. The remote location where his vehicle was found presents significant challenges, including harsh environmental conditions and limited access, which may have hindered search efforts....Read More
