The day before Ashley's disappearance, her aunt, Joyce Wade Lindsey, arrived at the family home for a visit. Lindsey was experiencing personal difficulties, and Ashley's mother, Vicky Lee Morris, offered her a place to stay. This visit marked the first meeting between Lindsey and Ashley, and they appeared to bond quickly.
