On May 27, 2022, Axel Brugere, a psychology student at Northern Arizona University, embarked on a hiking expedition with his friend, John Piekarz. Their chosen path was the A.B. Young Trail, notorious for its challenging 33 switchbacks that ascend 1,600 feet over 1.6 miles to the rim of Oak Creek Canyon.
