In October 2020, the academic community was shaken by the sudden disappearance of Dr. Sam Dubal, a 33-year-old assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Washington. An experienced hiker and accomplished scholar, Dr. Dubal embarked on a solo trip into Mount Rainier National Park, Washington, from which he never returned. His vanishing has left a void in both his personal and professional circles, prompting extensive search efforts and raising numerous questions.
Dr. Dubal's academic journey was marked by excellence and dedication. He earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed a Ph.D. in medical anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2018. His research focused on complex humanitarian issues, leading to the publication of his book, "Against Humanity: Lessons from the Lord’s Resistance Army," which critically examined the concept of humanity through the lens of his fieldwork in Uganda. In June 2020, Dr. Dubal joined the University of Washington as an assistant professor, where he was highly regarded by colleagues and students alike.
On October 9, 2020, Dr. Dubal set out for an overnight solo hike in Mount Rainier National Park. His chosen route was the Mother Mountain Loop, a 17-mile trail known for its scenic beauty and moderate difficulty. He planned to begin his hike at the Mowich Lake Trailhead and intended to return the following day. Equipped with appropriate gear, including a tent, sleeping bag, rain and snow attire, and a cellphone with a charger, Dr. Dubal was well-prepared for the excursion. Fellow hikers reported seeing him on the trail on October 9, confirming he commenced his journey as planned.
When Dr. Dubal failed to return on October 10, concern quickly mounted. He was reported missing on October 12, prompting the National Park Service to initiate search operations. Teams comprised of park rangers, Mountain Rescue volunteers, and canine units scoured the area. Despite their efforts, initial searches yielded minimal clues, with only a distinctive water bottle, believed to belong to Dr. Dubal, found along the trail....Read More
