The disappearance of Maria Florence Anjiras remains one of Norwalk, Connecticut's most perplexing cold cases. Vanishing without a trace in 1976 at the tender age of 14, Maria's case has haunted investigators and her community for decades. Despite numerous leads and reported sightings, her fate remains unknown. This article delves into the intricate details of Maria's disappearance, the subsequent investigations, and the enduring hope for resolution.
On February 12, 1976, Maria Anjiras was scheduled for a vocal lesson in the afternoon, followed by a babysitting job in the evening. Her father last saw her at their Midwood Road residence around 2:15 p.m. as he departed for work. Maria never arrived at her lesson or the babysitting appointment. Her blue English Racer bicycle was later discovered abandoned near St. Mary's Lane, approximately one mile from her home, in front of a friend's house. The friend, however, stated she had neither seen nor heard from Maria that day.
Maria's parents reported that she had been behaving normally on the day of her disappearance. Notably, two weeks prior, Maria had threatened to run away but was dissuaded by her father. When she left home on that fateful day, she took with her some money, pajamas, a pair of jeans, and several sweaters, suggesting a possible intention to leave voluntarily. However, the absence of any communication from Maria since then has led to suspicions of foul play.
In the weeks following her disappearance, there were multiple reported sightings of Maria around Norwalk. Witnesses, including individuals who knew her, claimed to have seen her at the Duchess Restaurant on Main Street and possibly in an orange or black car in the vicinity. In August 1976, a classmate reported seeing Maria at a bar on Westport Avenue, accompanied by a member of the Charter Oaks Motorcycle Club. This individual was identified and traced to Bethel, Connecticut. However, in 2015, authorities determined that the girl seen at the Charter Oaks clubhouse was not Maria but a 17-year-old from Danbury. ...Read More
