Early Life and Influences
Harold Frederick Shipman was born on January 14, 1946, in Nottingham, England, into a working-class family. He was the second of four children and shared a particularly close bond with his mother, Vera. During his teenage years, Shipman witnessed his mother's battle with terminal lung cancer, where she received morphine injections to alleviate her pain. This experience profoundly impacted him and is believed to have influenced his future actions.
Medical Education and Early Career
Shipman pursued medical studies at the Leeds School of Medicine, graduating in 1970. He began his medical career at Pontefract General Infirmary in West Yorkshire. By 1974, he secured a position as a general practitioner at the Abraham Ormerod Medical Centre in Todmorden. However, his early career was marred by controversy when he was caught forging prescriptions for pethidine, an opioid painkiller, for personal use.
