On the humid evening of July 9, 2017, 24-year-old Terrance M. Alford became the 99th homicide victim in New Orleans that year. A promising young man known for his gentle nature and dedication to family, Terrance's life was abruptly ended in a violent act that remains unsolved. His death not only devastated his loved ones but also highlighted the persistent issue of gun violence in the city.
Terrance spent the earlier part of that Sunday at a party on Conti Street. As the evening progressed, he accepted a ride home from his best friend's cousin, who was driving a white Honda. During the journey, Terrance spoke with his sister, who offered to prepare a meal for him—a gesture he eagerly accepted. However, before heading home, the driver made a stop at his girlfriend's residence on the 1900 block of North Johnson Street. It was there that a gunman emerged from nearby bushes and opened fire on the vehicle. The driver managed to flee the scene, driving approximately 700 yards to a Rally's restaurant at the corner of St. Bernard and Galvez Street, seeking help.
Around 10:25 PM, reports of gunfire on North Johnson Street reached the New Orleans Police Department. Simultaneously, officers were flagged down at the Rally's location. Terrance was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver sustained injuries and was transported to a hospital. News of the shooting quickly spread through social media, with Terrance's sister learning of the incident via an Instagram post. She rushed to the scene, only to find a crowd gathered and her brother's life tragically ended.
Born on July 2, 1993, Terrance was the son of Terrance Jupiter and the late Shewanda Alford. After his mother's passing in 2009 due to cancer, he and his siblings were raised by their aunt, Maechelle Alford. Terrance was known for his warm personality, love for basketball, and commitment to his studies. His untimely death left a void in the lives of his family and friends, who remember him as a "nice boy" with a bright future ahead....Read More
