A Season Turned Tragic: The Capsizing of the F/V Northwest Mariner

On January 15, 1995, the F/V Northwest Mariner, a 106-foot crabbing vessel, capsized in the frigid waters of the Bering Sea. The incident resulted in the deaths of six Seattle-area fishermen, including Bruce Forde, a 42-year-old seasoned fisherman from Edmonds, Washington. The vessel had departed from St. Paul Island, Alaska, just a day prior, embarking on what was to be the first day of the crabbing season. The Bering Sea's notoriously harsh winter conditions, with winds exceeding 40 knots and 20-foot seas, proved too formidable, leading to the vessel's demise.
