From Selbu to Chicago: The Making of Belle Gunness
Born Brynhild Paulsdatter Størseth on November 11, 1859, in Selbu, Norway, Belle Gunness was the youngest of eight children in a poor farming family. At 21, she immigrated to the United States, settling in Chicago with her sister. There, she Americanized her name to Belle and began working as a domestic servant before marrying fellow Norwegian immigrant Mads Sorenson in 1884 .
Early Tragedies and Suspicious Patterns
The couple opened a candy store, which mysteriously burned down, allowing them to collect insurance money. Their home also suffered a similar fate.
