The Crime That Shook Columbia
On the early morning of November 1, 2001, the city of Columbia, Missouri, was rocked by the brutal murder of Kent Heitholt, a respected sports editor for the Columbia Daily Tribune. Heitholt was found beaten and strangled in the newspaper's parking lot shortly after 2:00 a.m. The last known person to see him alive was colleague Michael Boyd, who spoke with Heitholt between 2:12 and 2:20 a.m. Moments later, janitor Shawna Ornt stepped outside for a cigarette and witnessed two men near Heitholt's car. She alerted her supervisor, Jerry Trump, and both observed the figures before they fled the scene. The initial investigation yielded no substantial leads, leaving the case unsolved for two years.
