The Tragedy on Bus 1170

On the evening of July 30, 2008, a routine Greyhound bus journey across the Canadian prairies turned into an unimaginable nightmare. Tim McLean, a 22-year-old carnival worker, was returning home to Winnipeg after a stint in Edmonton. Seated at the rear of the bus, he was listening to music through his headphones, unaware of the impending danger. Vince Li, a fellow passenger, suddenly produced a large knife and began stabbing McLean repeatedly. As the bus came to a halt and passengers fled in terror, Li continued his assault, ultimately beheading McLean and displaying the severed head to those outside. He then proceeded to mutilate and consume parts of the victim's body.

Understanding Vince Li's Background

Vincent Weiguang Li was born on April 30, 1968, in Dandong, Liaoning, China. He earned a degree in computer science from the Wuhan Institute of Technology in 1992 and worked as a software engineer in Beijing until 1998. Li immigrated to Canada in 2001, becoming a Canadian citizen in 2006. In Canada, he held various jobs, including working at a church in Winnipeg and delivering newspapers.
