The Origins of a Hidden Nightmare
David and Louise Turpin's story began in Princeton, West Virginia, where they met as teenagers. Marrying in 1985 when David was 23 and Louise just 16, the couple eventually had 13 children between 1988 and 2015. Initially identifying as Pentecostal Christians, they claimed to have many children because "God called on them" to do so. Over time, they distanced themselves from their religious roots and experimented with alternative lifestyles, including swinging and witchcraft.
The Turpins lived in Fort Worth, Texas, before moving to Rio Vista, Texas, in 1999. In 2007, they relocated most of their children into an isolated trailer on their property, while they lived separately with the two youngest. The children were left to fend for themselves, often resorting to eating ketchup, mustard, or ice due to severe starvation. Neighbors later discovered deplorable conditions, including feces, ropes tied to beds, and dead animals.
