The Appalachian Trail, stretching over 2,190 miles from Georgia to Maine, has long been a sanctuary for hikers seeking solace in nature. However, in May 1981, this tranquility was shattered by a brutal double murder that left an indelible mark on the trail's history. The victims, Robert Mountford Jr. and Laura Susan Ramsay, both 27-year-old social workers from Maine, embarked on the trail to raise funds for a school dedicated to children with developmental challenges. Their journey, however, met a tragic end near the Wapiti Shelter in Virginia.

The Fateful Encounter at Wapiti Shelter

On May 19, 1981, Mountford and Ramsay encountered Randall Lee Smith, a local resident known for his reclusive nature. The trio shared a meal at the Wapiti Shelter, a common practice among hikers fostering camaraderie. Unbeknownst to Mountford and Ramsay, this act of kindness would lead to their untimely deaths.
