A Tragic Discovery
On the morning of February 24, 2012, the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago was shaken by the tragic discovery of 44-year-old Candace Butts, who was found stabbed to death in her apartment on the 1900 block of East 73rd Street. The gruesome scene was uncovered by her mother, Gloria Martin, who lived in the adjacent apartment. Martin had become concerned when her calls to Candace went unanswered, prompting her to enter her daughter's residence, where she found Candace lifeless in her bedroom.
A Close-Knit Family
Candace shared a deep bond with her family, particularly with her 18-year-old daughter, Tia Butts, and her mother, Gloria. The three lived in close proximity, with back porch doors facing each other, facilitating daily interactions. Tia and Candace were inseparable, even attending Olive-Harvey College together, where Candace was pursuing a degree in criminal justice following the murder of her father the previous year.
