A Dedicated Community Member

Christon Barlow, a 52-year-old lifelong resident of Chicago's South Shore neighborhood, was known for his dedication to helping others. After recovering from a week-and-a-half-long coma in December 2014, he moved into the Bronzeville Park Skilled Living and Nursing Center. There, he quickly became a beloved figure among both staff and residents, often assisting those with mobility issues by running errands and providing transportation. His sister, Phyllys Barlow-Greene, noted that he was so well-regarded that the nursing home hired him as a transporter for patients and to run errands for nurses and residents.

The Tragic Evening

On the evening of June 23, 2015, Barlow was performing one of his routine errands, picking up items for the nursing home staff and residents. At approximately 8:30 p.m., near the intersection of 35th Street and Indiana Avenue—just a block south of the nursing home—gunfire erupted. Barlow was one of four individuals shot in what appeared to be a drive-by shooting. He was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital about half an hour later.
