Betty Smith, an 89-year-old resident of Chicago, was tragically shot and killed on March 3, 2007, by her husband, Charles Smith, who was 84 at the time. The incident took place in their shared home. Charles Smith reportedly acted out of despair as Betty's health was deteriorating due to advancing dementia. He told authorities that he could no longer bear to watch his wife's condition worsen.
