African-American / Black. On June 29, 2008, Harrison Ellis, a 32-year-old man from Chicago, stepped into the early-morning air on the South Side and never made it home. An unidentified assailant approached, gunfire broke the quiet, and Ellis fell—mortally wounded. He was rushed from the street to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, one more life cut short by a shooter who vanished into the city before a name could be attached to the violence.
