On January 31, 2009, a tragic fire engulfed a three-story apartment building at 3912 West Argyle Street in Chicago's Albany Park neighborhood, claiming the lives of 23-year-old Hispanic female Roxana Ocampo and her 7-year-old daughter, Itzel Fernandez. At the time, Roxana Ocampo was five months pregnant. The fire, which started in the building's front stairwell, quickly spread, trapping residents on the upper floors. Despite the presence of working smoke detectors, the rapid progression of the blaze made escape difficult. Roxana Ocampo managed to evacuate her 4-year-old son, Tony, and two cousins but tragically lost her life when she re-entered the building in an attempt to save her daughter.
Investigations by the Chicago Police Department's Bomb and Arson Unit determined that the fire was intentionally set using an accelerant, leading authorities to classify the deaths as homicides. The deliberate nature of the fire prompted a thorough search for the individual responsible. On March 13, 2009, police arrested 18-year-old Jovan Djurdilov, charging him with first-degree murder and aggravated arson in connection with the fatal blaze.
