In the winter of 2011, the brief life of a six-week-old infant named Andre Melton came to a tragic end in Glendale, Arizona, a city within the Phoenix metropolitan area. On January 9th, paramedics were summoned to a residence after receiving a report that the young male had become unresponsive. The initial account suggested he had choked and spit up, but the reality of his condition was far more grim.
Upon arrival, first responders found the infant in dire straits and immediately began CPR before rushing him to a nearby hospital. At the hospital, the medical team admitted Andre to the intensive care unit, where a CT scan uncovered a central brain bleed. Despite the efforts of the medical staff, Andre's condition deteriorated, and he was pronounced dead. The medical findings pointed towards a deeply disturbing cause: non-accidental trauma, with shaken baby syndrome being the suspected mechanism of his fatal injuries.
The investigation into Andre's death quickly focused on his parents, 19-year-old Rhiannon Hughey and 21-year-old Teamer Melton. However, as law enforcement and Child Protective Services began to probe the circumstances surrounding the infant's death, the two parents abruptly fled the state of Arizona. Their sudden departure and subsequent refusal to cooperate with the joint investigation conducted by the Glendale Police Department and CPS left many questions unanswered.
