On the afternoon of July 26, 2020, Andrew Williams, a 29-year-old Black man, was fatally shot outside his home in Evanston, Illinois, just hours before his 30th birthday celebration. As he approached a friend's car to retrieve ice for the party, two masked individuals confronted him, blocking his entry into the vehicle. Without warning, both assailants drew handguns equipped with extended magazines and opened fire, striking Williams five times in the neck, torso, and arms.
He was transported to Evanston Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries less than an hour later.
Investigators identified the attackers as Ronald Green, 23, and brothers Terrance Hooper, 23, and Tyree Hooper, 22. All three were apprehended and charged with first-degree murder. According to prosecutors, the suspects were affiliated with a street gang engaged in a longstanding feud with a rival gang connected to some of Williams' associates. Surveillance footage and GPS data revealed that the trio convened at a Ramada Inn in Wheeling before traveling to Evanston in a silver Nissan Altima with obscured license plates. They disabled their cell phones shortly before the attack, presumably to avoid detection.
At the crime scene, authorities recovered multiple shell casings, including one 9mm and six. 40 caliber rounds. Subsequent searches uncovered a. 45 caliber handgun beneath the driver's seat of the vehicle Green was operating at the time of his arrest and a. 380 caliber handgun concealed in Tyree Hooper's clothing. Both Green and Terrance Hooper had prior convictions for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and had served 18-month sentences in state prison. Green was on parole at the time of Williams' killing. The three suspects were denied bail and remained in custody pending their court appearances.
